Driving to STPR 2007

This weekend we went to the 2007 Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally in Wellsboro, PA. The five to six hour drive wasn’t bad; the Impreza managed just under 29 MPG despite the roof rack and camping gear.

We stopped at a new vegetarian/vegan friendly restaurant in Selinsgrove, PA called “Emma’s Food for Life”. It was a good find as I often have a tough time finding decent food on the road. Speaking of which, we stopped at a McDonald’s for some coffee; this would be the first time I’ve purchased anything from them since a road trip to Canada in ’01. The results of this purchase were as disappointing as the salad-in-a-cup I bought in ’01. The coffee smelled a little burnt and tasted mediocre at best; I give it a four out of ten.

A Red Newt

Anyway, we arrived at the campground around sunset on Friday. The campground was nice; the stream crossing required to get to our site was a nice touch.

This was the first Pro Rally I’ve been to since The 100 Acre Wood Rally in 2002, and the first time I’ve been a spectator (I worked timing and scoring at the 100AW). We went to two stages. The first was the “Subaru Splash” creek crossing, which was crowded, and the second was Colton Point, which was unfortunately cancelled. The stage was treated as a transit stage, so I was able to get a few good shots of the cars. Overall, the rally was a lot of fun. This newt we met at the campground thought so as well.

I don’t have any photos, but we did make one more creek crossing on the way home. We drove south from the campground past the “Subaru Splash” spectator stage (as the GPS recommended) and came to a fairly wide and deep creek. I had overheard some people at the rally discussing this crossing, and didn’t think much of it. Anyway, I checked of the creek (from the car), and it looked a little deep, but recently traveled. So, we drove through, water splashed over the hood and a couple inches over the windshield, but we got through with no problems. Just to be sure, I popped the hood and check the intake for water; it was dry. So, I’m not sure what the water fording depth the Impreza is rated for, but it handled it well.

Some photos from the rally:

Updates

Friday, April 6th, 2007

I’m in the process of updating 251.org, as I have been for the last six months. Here are a couple of charts that may show up on the new site, whenever it happens to get completed. The first chart shows that I need to keep cars around longer, and the second shows three colored lines: two solid and one dashed. Both show that I have too much time on my hands.
